A brief history
The Department of Medical Emergencies was founded by Order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova No. 52, item 2 of April 30, 1993 "On the Founding of the Department of Medical Emergencies within the Faculty of Refresher Training of Physicians"and Order of Nicolae Testemitanu State Universityof Medicine and Pharmacy PS. 329 of June 22, 1993 "On the Founding of the Department of Medical Emergencies within the Faculty of Refresher Training of Physicians". The department carries out its didactic-scientific and curative-prophylactic activity in accordance with the Charter of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and other directing acts of the university management.
The clinical bases for ensuring the training, research and curative-prophylactic process according to Nicolae Testemitanu University Contracts include:
Emergency Medicine Institute public health institution (Contract no. 8 of 21. 02. 2018) – Department of Emergency Medicine, Therapy, Urology;
National Center for Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (Contract no. 56C / 18 of 01.11.2018);
Mother and Child Institute (Contract no. 130 of 22.12.2017) – Department of Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Resuscitation and Toxicology Unit.
Chief of chair: Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences, university professor Gheorghe Ciobanu.
The department's staff consists of 1 Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences, 6 doctors of medicine, of which 4 are associate professors, and 7 assistant professors.
The Department of Medical Emergencies is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate training in the field of emergency medicine.
Didactic and professional training includes:
1. Undergraduate training of students in emergency medicine
Since 1996, a Medical Emergency Course has been organized for the 6th year students of the Faculty of Medicine 1 and 2 and the 5th year students of Public Health and Management Faculty. The training also included medical-surgical case simulations at the University Center for Simulation in Medical Training.
Since 2007, a Primary Emergency Care Course has been implemented for first year students at the Faculties of Medicine 1 and 2, Dentistry, Pharmacy and since 2018 - at the Faculties of Optometry and Nursing. Since 2015, the emergency care course for the 6th year students has been transferred to the 5th year of studies (Faculty of Medicine 1 and Medicine 2).
Sixth year students serve a practical internship in emergency care of one month at the bases of the Departments of Emergency Medicine / Emergency Reception Units and the Prehospital Emergency Care Service.
2. Postgraduate training
Residents - emergency medicine, family medicine, clinical laboratory diagnosis, phthisiopulmonology, dentistry, traumatology, oro-maxillo-facial surgery, sports medicine.
3. Continuing postgraduate training
According to the program of continuous professional training of doctors and pharmacists, the following activities are performed at the department:
13 courses (modules) and upon request - one course (module) of 4 months (primary specialization in emergency medicine).
Thematic refresher training includes 10 courses with a 2-week duration (70 credits) and 3 courses of 0.25 months (50 credits).
The department offers continuous refresher training courses for doctors working in the Prehospital Emergency Care system, Emergency Medicine Departments, Emergency Reception Units and a module for family doctors.
The main objective of the teaching process resides in the continuous training of emergency physicians within the Emergency Care Service and the Departments of Emergency Medicine of the Republic of Moldova. In total, 1604 trainees studied at the department during 2013-2018 (922 were scheduled). The annual permanent training plan has been exceeded. 281 emergency physicians were trained under residency programs at the department between 2000 and 2018. Emergency medical training programs include thematic and general training in medical and surgical emergencies.
The department implements new training programs according to the European Guide and AHA for Cardiopulmonary-Cerebral Resuscitation as well as other Scientific Societies in the field of medical and surgical emergencies. Until 1996, the continuous postgraduate training in emergency medicine was in the form of one-year internship. During this period, the Department's staff developed and updated the residency training programs. The training programs have been updated in accordance with the requirements of the European Resuscitation Council Guidelines.
In 2015-2018 academic years, three new modules were implemented for the refresher training of emergency physicians:
Intensive care maneuvers in emergency medicine (PT- for emergency physicians);
Monitoring, diagnosis and treatment systems in emergency medicine. (PT- for emergency physicians);
In 2018, the Pharmacotherapy module in medical-surgical emergencies (PT- for emergency physicians) was implemented.
Under the refresher training modules, standardized case simulations of medical-surgical emergencies, carried out at the University Center for Medical Simulation, are implemented.
Training objectives in MEDICAL EMERGENCIES discipline
One of the main objectives of the Emergency Medicine Training Programs is to ensure the level of knowledge, skills and expertise that each student, resident, emergency physician must acquire during the training period in accordance with the training practices and experience of the European Community countries.
The second objective is represented by the basic areas of competence of an emergency physician: patient care, medical knowledge, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills, professionalism, ethical and legal issues, organizational planning and service management skills, education and research.
The third goal is to acquire in Emergency Physicians system-based knowledge and common presentation symptoms.
The fourth objective is acquiring knowledge in particular aspects of emergency medicine: abuse and aggression, disaster medicine, environmental accidents, aspects of forensic medicine, prophylaxis and health promotion, aspects of management in emergency medicine, international experience in organizing and operation of emergency services, psycho-social problems.
The fifth goal is the development of standardized practical skills - basic clinical procedures and skills in adults and children.
